Codenamed Mission X, Porsche’s next halo car is being developed as an all-electric flagship — and it is being positioned as the spiritual successor to the legendary 918 Spyder.
A target that says everything
Forget vague promises. Porsche has set the Mission X a benchmark that tells you exactly how serious it is: a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one horsepower for every kilogram. In a heavy-by-nature electric car, that figure is staggering, and achieving it will demand obsessive attention to battery packaging, lightweight materials and aerodynamics. If Porsche hits the mark, the Mission X will sit at the very top of the performance-EV bracket.
900 volts of ambition
Underpinning the car is a 900-volt system architecture — double the voltage of many current EVs. Higher voltage means faster charging, lower weight in the wiring and the ability to deliver enormous power without the system overheating. It is the kind of foundational engineering that lets a hypercar perform lap after lap rather than fading after a single hot run, a problem that has dogged many fast electric cars.
The 918 connection
The 918 Spyder, launched over a decade ago, was a hybrid icon that helped redefine what a Porsche flagship could be, even setting a famous Nürburgring benchmark in its day. The Mission X is meant to do the same thing for the electric era — to prove that an EV can stir the soul, not just the spreadsheet. The original Mission X concept hinted at dramatic Le Mans-style upward-opening doors and a cab-forward silhouette that screamed motorsport intent.
Why this one is a litmus test
The Mission X is more than a single model. It is Porsche planting a flag, declaring that electric performance can carry the same emotional weight as a flat-six at full song. For purists nervous about an electrified future, this is the car that has to win hearts as well as lap times. If any brand can pull that off, history suggests it is the one from Zuffenhausen.
