One car, one owner, and the last W16 that will ever look like this

The Destrier arrived at The Quail on 14 August as the third one-off from Bugatti's Solitaire programme. It borrows the Bolide's bones, then throws away almost everything that made the Bolide a track car.

Bugatti has built exactly one of these, for exactly one person, and the rest of us will only ever see it in photographs. That is the arrangement now. The Destrier is the third car to come out of Programme Solitaire, following the Brouillard and the FKP Hommage, and it made its public debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week.

What it is underneath

The bones are the Bolide’s — the track-only machine Bugatti revealed in 2020 and put into production, in a run of forty, in 2023. What the Destrier does with those bones is the interesting part. The Bolide exists to generate downforce and stop hard; every surface on it is arguing with the air. The Destrier removes most of that argument.

The enormous rear structures are gone. The bodywork closes over itself in long, uninterrupted curves. It sits on twenty-inch wheels at the front and twenty-ones at the rear, and it stands 39.4 inches tall, which makes it the lowest car Bugatti has ever built.

The aerodynamic hardware that justified the Bolide has been traded for proportion. That is a road car’s decision, not a track car’s.

The engine, and why it matters

Under all of it sits the 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16, producing 1,578 horsepower. Bugatti has already said the Bolide would be the last car built around that engine. The Tourbillon that follows uses a V16 developed with Cosworth, paired with electric motors — a different proposition entirely, and by every measure a more modern one.

So the Destrier is not really a new model. It is a coda. It is what happens when a manufacturer has one more W16 to place and a customer willing to fund a bespoke body around it.

The pattern worth noticing

Monterey 2026 was full of this. Not limited series of twenty or forty, but single commissions: one car, one buyer, a name invented for the occasion. It is the clearest signal yet of where the top of this market has moved. The scarcity is no longer in the production run. It is in the fact that there is no production run at all.
